December Twitch Schedule

GamesandGrindsTwitchBannerSchedule

Aspen and I have decided to try something a little different for this December. We’ve been wanting to get back onto a regular Twitch schedule, but our personal schedules are rarely consistent.  And so, instead of having a set weekly schedule, we planned out a set of days in the months when we KNEW we were able to stream. Those days are listed above. Hopefully this will allow us to keep to a schedule.

This format also allows us to announce a few particularly exciting days coming up in the next month:

  • December 1st-12th: TwitchAlerts is hosting a 2-week long charity event and we’re joining in. Visit the channel during one of these shows and any “Tips” given will go entirely to the preselected TwitchAlerts charity of the day.
  • December 19th: We’ll be celebrating a birthday here at Games & Grind by hosting a 12-Hour marathon! Show starts at 8:00 AM HST (1:00PM ESt)

We hope to be online by 8:00 PM HST on weekdays, and weekends are open for now. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for updates on show times and unscheduled shows.

A Turkey for Two

Thanks to all those who tuned in on Thursday for our Thanksgiving stream!  This marks the third year in a row that we’ve spend Thanksgiving in Hawaii and away from our families, so it was great to spend some time connecting with folks on the holiday.  Plus, we gained 8 new followers and played a few rounds of Splatoon with some of them, so it was a pretty successful day!

A few thoughts on Oktoberfest beers

Fall is a bittersweet time to live in Honolulu. As the rest of the country transitions into the colder months of the year we’re still stuck dealing with the same heat than has been plaguing us for months. Thankfully, Fall-based cuisine still finds its way out to the island, including one of my favorite styles of beer. No, not pumpkin-spice (although some of them belong in the discussion). I am talking about the hallowed Oktoberfest brews that grace us with their rich tastes this time of year. Every major craft brewery seems to try their hand at the festival-seasonal and I’m such a sucker for them I’m willing to try them all. While most of them don’t make it out to the island, two particular brews have piqued my interest: Sierra Nevada’s Oktoberfest brew, and a local variation from Honolulu Beerworks. Both are quite good and each have their own unique takes on a very traditional style.

Oktoberfest, also known as Marzen style beers are characteristically brewed as full-bodied beers, rich and toasty in flavor, and dark-copper in color. It’s no surprise that I enjoy them as much as I do considering they share many similarities to other personal favorites such as dunkelweisses and amber ales. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this, but to me an Oktoberfest beer is complete if it is sessionable, rich, and pairs well with brats and kraut. It might not be asking much, but hey, Oktoberfest is a big party and I like to keep my parties as possible.

The Stages of Splatoon: Ranked

SplatoonRankings

It’s been a few months since Splatoon’s launch on the Nintendo Wii U, and the game has expanded its roster of maps by quite a bit. Aspen and I decided it was as good a time as ever to rank them and share a few thoughts.

Aspen

First Place- Kelp Dome

In my opinion this is the perfect map to showcase all styles of play.  You have varying levels with the overhangs that connect the different map sections, wide open space for full on turf wars and paths that let you weave in and out of the different areas.  This one really feels like it’s anyone’s game and I think gives the most fair advantage to all styles and levels of play.

Second Place- Arowana Mall

I find the different elevations on this one so much fun!  It makes it a challenge because you really never know what is right over the hill and around the corner.  While you’d think it’d be easy for one team to get control and dominate (and don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely been in rounds where that has happened), overall the layout still allows for either team to take control at any point throughout the match.

Last Place- Saltspray Rig

Admittedly this one makes the bottom of my list because I’m so terrible at playing it.  I don’t have the coordination to stay on the course, so I usually end up falling to my squid death.  This map just doesn’t do it for me though…  I feel like too many twists and turns make it complicated to master and play as a team.  Controlled chaos is good in Splatoon, but for me this course is just too all over the place to enjoy.
