Sausage Balls

SAUSAGE BALLS.  Just typing it, there’s something so deliciously dirty about this recipe.  And by deliciously dirty, I mean unhealthy and greasy in every possible way.  I don’t remember the first time my mom made these, but they are a staple in our house around the holidays.  They’re easy to make and the batch is huge, so leftovers last for a couple of days (if you have self control and don’t eat all of them right out of the oven).  These were a great way to start our stream marathon on Monday.  There are several different recipes out there, here’s the one I use.

Review: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

It’s been four years since Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii. It took a while, but I finally got around to beating the game. Naturally now seems like as good of a time as any to share my thoughts on the game. Sure it might be a procrastinator’s review but opinionated reviews matter as much now as they did three years ago (not at all), so why not? A new release for one of Nintendo’s marquee franchises always deserves some attention. Read on to find out my thoughts on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, a game that shares its story beautifully despite a few distracting issues.

Recipe: The Poutine Dog

PoutineDogThe work of art you see above is our best attempt at the poutine dog, a culinary innovation unveiled by the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park for the 2014 baseball season. It tastes as glorious as it looks, and I’ve taken it upon myself to type out a recipe for it because everyone deserves to have a little poutine dog in their life.

Everything you need:
The best grillable meat links you can find.
Buns to match
Spicy Mustard
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
2 cups beef stock
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds Idaho white potatoes, peeled and cut
1 clove minced garlic
¼ cup goat cheese (technically supposed to be cheese curd, but our grocery store was fresh out of curd)
½ teaspoon worcestershire sauce
Canola Oil, for frying

Steps to Perfection:
Combine butter and flour in saucepan over medium heat and stir until blended.
Heat for 12-15 minutes until mixture breaks down into a dark roux.
Stir in beef stock and season with minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and cook for another 15 to 20 minutes and keep warm.

Grill your meat links on medium to high heat.
Char links accordingly.

Cut potatoes thinly into optimal fry shape.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add potatoes and then blanch for 4 minutes.
Remove fries, let cool, and dry with paper towel.
Season fries to your heart’s content.
Heat oil in deep pan and fry potatoes until golden brown.
Remove fries and pat dry.

Lightly toast your buns.

Assemble your poutine dog as you would a typical hot dog, then wedge fries between meat and bun, sprinkle your goat cheese (or curds), and smother it all in gravy. Be sure to pair with a light and crisp beer (the brew pictured is Kona Brewery’s Castaway IPA) to keep from slipping into a coma. Enjoy.

My thoughts after an hour with Splatoon

Nintendo launched its fledgling shooter Splatoon into the public’s hands this weekend with the Global Test Fire, a multiplayer stress test split up into three 1-hour long blocks. I was able to join in on one of these sessions this morning to put the game through its paces. It may have only been an hour, but Splatoon left a fairly positive impression on me. Here are a few things that I took special note of that I think you might find interesting:

The tablet is a bit wonky for a shooter, but manageable.

The Wii U tablet controller was not made with shooters in mind. After playing Splatoon I feel comfortable saying that. It’s big and bulky and there’s an odd disconnect between your hands when trying to get them to interact together at once. The closest comparison I can come up with is trying to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time. That is what it feels like to play a shooter with the Wii U tablet controller.

That’s not to say it’s indomitable though. After a few rounds my hands seemed to sync up and was able to begin stringing kills together in a way that felt somewhat natural. It’s certainly not my preferred way to play. The Wii U Pro controller would be far more comfortable to use, but the tablet is a serviceable option. Also, the motion controls with the tablet are not worth the hassle. Do yourself a favor and switch over to standard controls in the settings as soon as you can.

Every class seems useful.

Class-based shooters are in a constant struggle to find a proper balance between each class’s unique roles. Thankfully Splatoon seems to have this little issue worked out. While I only had a limited amount of time with each class, it’s already quite clear that each loadout can play a vital role within a round. Roller classes play a kind of support role, covering everything they touch. Chargers act as anti-player deterrents, with the ability to take out players before they can cover the map in paint. Meanwhile, the shooter classes land somewhere in between. Each class allows for a very specific role and should give players plenty of opportunities to contribute to their team’s efforts. If you want an example of how well these classes are balanced, just look at the makeup of teams that consistently win. In my experience, the winning teams were normally the ones that had a variety of classes working together.

Building a Better Battlestation

2015-04-11 11.39.23

A proper gaming computer is only as good as the foundation it is built upon. That foundation of course being a desk. Whether a short session of gaming, or a weekend marathon, gamers should take care to make sure their gaming hub has all the necessary accommodations to make the most of your time with a game. With a new gaming rig on the way, I decided it was time to prepare a new base of operations for all things video games. Click the link to see how I refurbished an old desk and turned it into a fully operational gaming battlestation.
